Brittany Conine - Cogate Contest Winner

Colgate Country Showdown displays local, regional talent

*First-place winner to compete for state title, cash prizes By Ronna Ross Pennington - contributing writer

Brittany Conine of Little Rock won first place in Clark County's Colgate Country Showdown in Arkadelphia on Saturday. Clark County Broadcasting sponsored the event at The Clubhouse in Arkadelphia.

Conine is the 18-year old daughter of Keith and Debbie Conine. With family who lives in Arkadelphia, she had a number of family members turn out for her performance in the Showdown - including her grandmother, who was celebrating a birthday on Saturday.

Conine will start college this fall at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway and will major in early childhood education in case her plans for a music career don't work out, she said.

Conine performed Faith Hill's "Like We Never Loved at All." As first-place winner of the Clark County Showdown, Conine won $100 cash and will move on to the next round of competition at the Arkansas State Fair. That winner will compete for a chance to win one of the five region titles this fall, leading to competition for the national title and $100,000 during a live television performance. Past Colgate Showdown contestants include Martina McBride, Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks, Sara Evans, and Leann Rimes.

First runner-up was Leigh Helms of Bigelow. Formerly of Arkadelphia, Helms now works as a 4-H coordinator. She sang "Coat of Many Colors" by Dolly Parton. Both Helms and Conine have competed in multiple Showdowns in the past. Conine placed third in Clark County's competition last year.

Katelyn Friday traveled to Arkadelphia from Horatio for the contest. The 14-year-old won second runner-up honors for her rendition of Loretta Lynn's "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man."

Other contestants included Alli Hames of Arkadelphia, who sang "When God Fearing Women Get the Blues," 14-year-old Hillary Frisby of Gurdon singing, Girls Love Country Boys, "Karaoke Dude" Ross Patrick of Arkadelphia who sang David Alan Coe's "The Ride", 12-year-old Tyler Ogles of Paragould singing "Don't Make Me," Ray Wood of Magnolia with another Coe favorite, "You Don't Have To Call Me Darlin," and Christina Daniels of Gurdon singing Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take The Wheel."

KYXK 106.9 morning show host Sherry Kelly hosted the event at The Clubhouse, located at Turtle Pointe Golf Club in Arkadelphia. Clark County Broadcasting's Annette Jenning's served as contestant coordinator. Other staff members from the radio stations also assisted in the special event.

Now in it's 26th year, the Colgate Country Showdown finds the most promising country music talent in America.

Nearly $200,000 in cash and prizes is awarded to thousands of aspiring artists who compete each year.
